DIVING IN JERSEY

As a result of the warm waters surrounding the channel islands, local waters are home to a varied range of wild life. The dive centre is located on the water's edge at one of the island's many marine parks, resulting in a fantastic range of marine life making the bay their home. We have both north Atlantic species as well as species you would normally expect to find in warmer climes, such as the mediterranean. Dolphins and seals are regular visitors.

Jersey has a fascinating Maritime history and possibly the most unique water movements in the world - boasting as much as 40 feet spring tides.

Jersey lies in the bay of St Malo, which, until approximately 18,000 years ago, was a dry bay. At the end of the last ice age, water rose, flooding the bay with only the highest peaks remaining above sea level. These peaks now form the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou & Brechou).

The waters around Jersey range from the shallow bays to a maximum of about 60 – 80 metres (west of the islands).

The geological history of the island has resulted in a fascinating underwater world with platoons caverns and steep sided underwater valleys. The tides here are some of the biggest in the world resulting in vast amounts of water rich nutrients flowing around the islands providing food for the wonderfully diverse range of marine life.

The tides give us some of the best drift diving in the world with flows as fast as 10 knots at times.

The tides, currents and jagged underwater peaks have caused many a disaster for local shipping leaving behind an incredible toll of divable wrecks. During the summer, our boat trips explore many of these artificial reefs, which team with life. Some of the wrecks to explore include:

  • The Heron 1961
  • The Ibex 1897
  • The Roebuck 1911
  • The Brighton 1878
  • The Walter Dare
  • The Heinrich Hey
  • The Schokland
To name but a few.
