Becoming a PADI Instructor

Becoming a PADI instructor

Do you want to spark a positive transformation in someone’s life? Does the reward of seeing fear turn to wonder inspire you?

Then becoming a PADI Instructor is right for you.

In my 12 years as a PADI instructor I’ve seen many lives change from the first breath underwater. I’ve coached many people through stress to mastery. I’ve presented topics to all ages at all levels. And I’ve been a role model for others on their journey. And it starts with the PADI IDC.

How do you become a PADI Instructor?

The most popular way to become a PADI Instructor is through the Instructor Development Course (IDC). The length varies depending on logistics etc but is around 7-10 days and is conducted by a PADI Course Director and IDC Staff Instructors. Independent study is done through e-learning prior to the IDC. During the IDC you will:

Learn how to use the PADI system.

Learn how to present theory topics.

Learn how to introduce skills in confined water.

Learn how to evaluate mastery in open water.

Learn how to plan course logistics.

Learn about risk management.

Learn how to manage Discover Scuba Divers.

Be tested on your dive theory and PADI Standards knowledge.

Demonstrate all 24 skills.

After success in the IDC you will be able to attend a PADI Instructor Exam (IE) this is usually directly after your IDC but you may attend any IE in any location if logistics dictate. During the IE a PADI Examiner will confirm you are ready to teach. This will involve knowledge development, confined water and open water skills, as well as dive theory and standards exams and skill demonstration.

Once you have passed the IE you are a PADI Instructor! This is just the beginning.
